Today we venture into the neighbouring county of Franche Comte to explore the little known Jura wines from the home of Louis Pasteur and the Fortified Citadelle of Besancon, another magnificent UNESCO heritage site. A 17th century masterpiece the Citadelle is considered to be the finest example of defensive engineering in France. Following a private guided tour of the main site there is some free time to explore some of the many exhibitions on the site. These include but are not limited to a regional country museum, Vauban and military architecture of the 17th century, evolution and a museum dedicated to the Resistance and Liberation of France. (note, this contains many original artefacts and photos and some people may find it distressing). This visit may be changed for a guided winery visit and wine tasting.

Lunch will be in the picturesque town of Arbois then we head over to Chateau Chalon – another of the Most Beautiful Villages in France for a tasting of one of Frances up and coming regions. Producing just half a percent of French wine with some unique grape varieties, the Jura produces the ever popular Pinot Noir and Chardonnay just as in Burgundy but we will get to taste such unknowns as Savignin and Trouseau. We will visit a 16th century cellar to delight our palates with Vin Jaune, Vin de Paille and vin ‘sous voile’. Alternatively, we may visit a family owned Chateau, reputed to be the most ancient winemaking chateau in France. Records go back to the year 1070 and the owners are related to the family Laguiche (majority holders of the vineyard of Montrachet in the Cote de Beaune).
